Joanne Goldkrand, Director of Education and Debbie Scaccio, Arts and Crafts Specialist at Block Institute have the below suggestions for great crafts that children can practice and learn key skills while having fun. Block Institute provides programs and services to children with developmental disabilities 3 to 8 years of age.
Activity: Popcorn Bracelets
A fun easy activity that will engage special needs children who will eat as they play.
Project will involve improving eye-hand coordination, focus and attending.
What you need:
Microwave oven
Microwave popcorn
Clean shoe laces with plastic ends for easy stringing
Bowl for eating
Bowl for stringing
What to do:
1) Adult should prepare popcorn according to directions on package; monitor heat so child can be safe
2) Portion out popcorn in the 2 bowls
3) String sample for child and enjoy
Activity: Tissue Paper Painting
A simple fun activity that encourages attending, focus, hand eye coordination. Activity allows for independence and success.
What you need:
Strips of colored tissue paper (2x5in)
Large white construction paper
Water
3 brushes of various sizes
Paper towels for clean up
What to do:
1) Paper needs to be placed on table
2) Child should lay strips onto white construction paper in any design that is his/her liking
3) When all tissue paper is placed, wet brush and gently go over the colored tissue
4) After all tissue paper is wet down, child should carefully take tissue off the construction paper and will be surprised to see colors stay on paper
5) Design is complete
