Convenient, instant saliva fertility test helps
couples determine when conception is most likely

(HealthNewsDigest.com) – If a new baby is on your wish list this year, you may want to learn all you can about improving your chances of conception. That’s because there’s only a 25 percent chance of conceiving each month. Even one in ten healthy, fertile couples can take a year or longer to become pregnant.
In the past, many couples have resorted to complicated, expensive and sometimes even messy methods for pinpointing ovulation. Now scientists have created an alternative test that measures the estrogen levels in saliva. It is accurate, inexpensive and easy to use.
Doctors have known since the 1950s that increased estrogen levels can be detected in saliva. “Women are at their most fertile period three to four days prior to ovulation, and in the two to three days following ovulation,” says Frank Sweet, a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine who specializes in obstetrics. “When used correctly, the saliva fertility tester is 98 percent accurate in predicting a woman’s most opportune time for conception.” The test, marketed under the brand name Maybe Baby™ fertility tester, is available at select pharmacies and through several online sources.
Maybe Baby is a lightweight mini-microscope, as compact as a lipstick tube, that can be used for years. Women need only place a small amount of saliva on the lens, allow it to dry, then look through the viewfinder. When a frost-like, fern-leaf pattern appears a woman is at her most fertile. Otherwise, formless dots appear on the lens.
“The advantage with the Maybe Baby tester is that it virtually eliminates the need for complicated daily temperature charts, or messy urine testing. The results are available in just a few minutes.”
Dr. Sweet adds that there are problems associated with other methods used to pinpoint ovulation. “Temperature charting doesn’t warn of ovulation in advance. A basal thermometer can only tell you when ovulation has occurred. The urine-based tests can be messy, and they may not give you enough advance warning. Plus, because they’re not reusable, they can become very expensive.”
For couples who want to try influencing their baby’s gender, Maybe Baby offers some help. “Because male sperm swim faster than female sperm, there is a much higher probability of conceiving a girl when a couple has intercourse three days before ovulation,” Dr. Sweet explains. “Conversely, having intercourse the day of ovulation may enhance your chances of having a boy.”
