(HealthNewsDigest.com)-Teachers say preparing little ones to learn about science is not only important-they do better in school, gain confidence and develop a love of learning-it’s also easier than many parents realize.
Every time you cook, garden, take a walk, sew on a button or turn on the TV, you can turn it into a science lesson for your youngsters.
• The kitchen can be a great way for children to learn about quantities and proportions. Children can help measure and count ingredients for simple recipes and learn to tell time while waiting for a cake to bake.
• Out of doors, you can help your child explore the world of nature by examining leaves, rocks and insects up close and noting their differences and similarities.
• Little ones can learn similar lessons from sorting buttons and colored thread.
• Another way to engage young learners in science is with the help of educational media at home and in the classroom.
“Science, technology, engineering and math are critical areas of development for children, and our characters are trusted guides for this learning journey,” said Lesli Rotenberg, SVP, Children’s Media, PBS. “It opens new worlds to children and allows every child to discover his or her greatest potential.”
For example, for preschoolers, PBS KIDS has “Sid The Science Kid,” which explores the science of everyday life; “Dinosaur Train,” which encourages basic scientific thinking and skills through natural science, natural history and paleontology; and “Curious George,” which inspires kids to explore science, math and engineering. Upcoming series “The Cat In The Hat Knows A Lot About That!” stars the well-known character as a dynamic guide for science-based exploration.
For early elementary school kids, PBS KIDS GO! features “Cyberchase” to help build math skills. “FETCH! with Ruff Ruffman” discusses global warming and energy consumption, gorilla habitats and the behaviors of striped skunks.
Families can also explore science with video and games from pbskids.org and pbskidsgo.org. Sites such as Kratts’ Creatures, EekoWorld, The Greens and more guide children as they discover new animals, outdoor environments and what it means to be “green.” Parents and educators can also find great ideas and free resources to encourage science exploration and problem solving on pbsparents.org and pbsteachers.org.
