(HealthNewsDigest.com) – NEW HYDE PARK, NY – Recognized as the ultimate professional by her peers on the executive front as well as a mentor and advocate for nurses at the bedside, Kerri Anne Scanlon, RN, chief nursing officer at LIJ Medical Center, recently won Nursing Spectrum magazine’s prestigious national Nurse Excellence award in the category of “advancing and leading the profession.”
“Kerri is most deserving of this highly coveted award because of her passion for nursing and dedication to patient care that is apparent to all of those who work with her,” said Maureen White, RN, senior vice president and chief nurse executive of the North Shore-LIJ Health System, at a special ceremony at LIJ honoring Ms. Scanlon. “Kerri is an effective leader and empowers other nurses to achieve their own personal best and to deliver compassionate, high-quality care to patients. The North Shore-LIJ Health System is extremely proud of her accomplishment.”
Ms. Scanlon, who oversees a budget of about $200 million and more than 1,500 full-time employees, is responsible for nursing practice, care delivery, administration, human resources, budgeting, strategic planning for nursing and clinical services, and ensuring high-quality patient care, along with her fellow managers.
Nursing Spectrum’s Excellence Awards, sponsored by Johnson & Johnson, recognize extraordinary contributions nurses make to their patients, each other and the profession. In May, Ms. Scanlon won a regional award in the category of advancing and leading the profession, making her eligible for the elite national award. In the national competition, regional winners in each of six categories were judged against other winners from across the country. Nominations of regional winners were blinded and ranked by national nursing leaders on the judging panel.
Ms. Scanlon was recognized for her leadership at LIJ Medical Center in implementing models of care that integrate various departments of the hospital in the delivery of care, ensuring clinical excellence and focusing on patient-centered care.
In winning the national award, Ms Scanlon said, “This is truly an incredible honor. Everything I accomplish is with the support of the talented and caring nurses, staff members and leadership team at LIJ as well as the senior leadership of the North Shore-LIJ Health System.”
Ms. Scanlon was also cited for developing an interdisciplinary council at the hospital comprised of a team of frontline nurses, nurse managers, physicians and patients who share suggestions about how to improve care. “We are moving nursing forward by imbedding the collaborative care approach to enhance our nursing practice,” she said.
According to Ms. Scanlon, part of LIJ’s nursing mission is to consistently attain top patient experience as evidenced by patient surveys; increase employee satisfaction and enhance clinical quality. In addition, the hospital is committed to helping make the North Shore-LIJ Health System the preeminent provider for nursing care in the region.
As LIJ’s top nurse leader, Ms Scanlon said she never loses sight of the importance “to empower staff, and honor patients and the human spirit.”
