(HealthNewsDigest.com) – With our robust longevity, many more seniors will be sitting down to the family dinner table this holiday season. But conversation with grandma and grandpa can be difficult and cause worry about competency, or even lead to excluding them from discussions.
CogniFit , provider of CogniFit Personal Coach online brain fitness software that applies personalized training aimed at increasing and maintaining the 14 fundamental cognitive skills (such as divided attention, field of vision, and long-term memory) as people age, and the Mental Health Association or Rockland, which was recently given a $64,000 grant by the New York State Office for the Aging to research who will engage in such brain strengthening activities, will be announcing a partnership next week to celebrate the aging brain and help family members and professional caregivers understand the subtleties of cognitive decline.
This holiday season, Dr. Karen Oates, Director of the Rockland County Mental Health Association, and Adriane Berg, consultant to the grant and CEO of GenerationBold suggests looking at the 10 warning signs that may indicate a loved one is experiencing some form of cognitive decline:
Decrease in Driving Ability – When relatives are on the way, do they get lost on familiar routes? Are they driving or parking more erratically?
Forgetting Familiar Words and Names – Are your family member’s words escaping them more than usual? Did they forget your niece or nephew’s name?
Inability to Retain New Names or Facts – When you introduce someone new at your gathering, can your family member remember their name? Do they recall facts about your life that you tell them throughout the evening?
Difficulty Preparing Meals – Are they having trouble planning meals or cooking dishes? Are they chopping vegetables more slowly or less accurately?
Repeating Stories or Statements – Has your family member told you the same story more than once at the gathering? Are they repeating comments they made earlier?
Speaking Differently – Is your loved one speaking at a normal tone and speed? Do you notice any slight slurring of words (which may indicate hearing loss)?
Avoiding Socializing – Does your relative seem disinterest in hobbies that they were once passionate about? Are they avoiding discussions with family members?
Decrease in Reaction Time – Are they taking longer to respond to you or situations around them?
Difficulty Paying Attention – Does your family member seem distant? Are they having trouble focusing on stories or lengthy activities?
Misplaces Keys or Glasses – Did you loved one forget there they put their glasses? Did they lose their keys (again)?
