(HealthNewsDigest.com) – COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State University’s Center for Personalized Health Care is gathering academic leaders, industry experts, government policy makers and healthcare providers from across the country to discuss the latest developments in P4 Medicine, which provides new ways to maintain health and quantify wellness, diagnose illness, and predict disease. The third Personalized Health Care National Conference will be held Oct. 14-15 at Ohio State’s Biomedical Research Tower, located at 460 W. 12th Ave.
With a theme of “Advancing Predictive, Preventive, Personalized, and Participatory Medicine,” attendees will hear from experts about revolutionizing medicine and transforming healthcare delivery in a way which will result in more precise, cost-effective and higher quality of health care for patients.
“We are leading the way in bringing P4 Medicine to our patients and consumers, and this year’s conference is focusing on empowerment as a crucial component to this metamorphosis of health care,” says Dr. Clay Marsh, executive director of OSU’s Center for Personalized Health Care. “We can improve outcomes significantly if patients and consumers are engaged and take a more active role in their health care,” adds Marsh, who is also senior vice president for research in the Office of Health Sciences, and vice dean for research in the College of Medicine.
This year’s keynote speakers include Dr. Leroy Hood, president and co-founder of the Seattle-based Institute for Systems Biology; Dr. Ralph Snyderman, director of the Center for Research on Prospective Health Care, James B. Duke Professor of Medicine, Chancellor Emeritus, Duke University Medical System; Gregory Downing, DO, PhD, project director for the Personalized Health Care Initiative, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; Neeli Bendapudi, PhD, professor of marketing, Fisher College of Business, director for managing services, The Ohio State University.
Speakers and expert panelists will discuss:
· Systems biology and the foundation of P4 Medicine, including genetic tests and biomarkers, complete genome sequencing, IPS cells and organ specific proteomics
· Prospective health care that transforms health care from sick care to health and wellness care
· Delivering the promise of pharmacogenomics and targeted therapy in patient care
· Transformation of health care through patient empowerment, innovative technologies, and self-management approaches
· Engaging and empowering patients and consumers for participatory health care
P4 Medicine utilizes advances in genomics and molecular diagnostics discoveries to provide predictive information that is necessary to tailor personalized disease management approaches for each individual. Therapeutics and health management tools are being developed to help prevent disease instead of merely treating the symptoms. Medicine of the future will also engage consumers to actively own and participate in their healthcare decisions. Patients will have access to a single portal that will electronically store their medical records and genetic profiles and tools that will analyze these data to guide them to precise strategies that promote wellness.
OSU Medical Center is collaborating with Seattle’s Institute for Systems Biology to establish the new innovation consortium, P4 Medicine Institute. Together, the Medical Center and ISB will combine systems biology research and clinical delivery resources to advance health services for patients with an innovative and proactive approach to disease prevention and maintenance of health and wellness. This complementary blend of leading-edge science, technology innovation, clinical research, healthcare delivery expertise, and medical access to patients provides a unique opportunity to catalyze the transformation of medicine from its current reactive mode to a proactive P4 mode.
The Ohio State University’s Center for Personalized Health Care (CPHC), created in 2005, facilitates and advocates for the creation and practice of healthcare methods based on an individual’s genetic, environmental, behavioral and cultural factors. What results is a tailored approach to wellness, disease prevention and, when required, health care. Personalized health care overarches all Ohio State University Medical Center initiatives.
The CPHC serves as an advocate and facilitator of research, education, prevention and treatments designed to meet patients’ individual needs. Its missions are to create a pipeline for innovation and accelerate the application and dissemination of discovery to realize the promise of personalized health care, and advocate for personalized health care locally, nationally and internationally.
