Taking the Next Step: Innovative Interventions for Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders
|
(HealthNewsDigest.com) – ATLANTA–Leaders in the field of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASDs) from across the United States and Canada will gather at the Emory Conference Center on Oct. 21-Oct. 23 to discuss interventions available to individuals with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) and related disorders. The conference will be held at the Emory Conference Center Hotel, 1615 Clifton Rd.
Exposure to alcohol during pregnancy is responsible for a spectrum of disorders ranging from Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, the most severe outcome, to less serious and more limited patterns of effects.
When a pregnant woman consumes alcohol, it crosses the placenta into the fetus’ bloodstream where it breaks down slowly. The high concentration of alcohol interferes with the levels of oxygen and nutrition essential for developing the tissues, organs and brain of a growing fetus.
Statistics show that in the United States, prenatal exposure to alcohol is one of the leading causes of birth defects and one of the most common causes of preventable mental retardation. According to the March of Dimes, it has been estimated that as many as 40,000 American babies are born with some type of alcohol-related damage each year.
In addition to the significant neurological problems experienced by children with FAS, prenatal alcohol exposure may affect physical and intellectual development. FAS also has been associated with problems of behavior and attention, affecting school performance and adaptive functioning in later life.
The conference is designed to provide information about successful, evidence-based interventions for problems resulting from FASD. Some of the presentation topics include early intervention, education, nutrition, self-regulation, and a number of interventions for youth, adolescents and young adults growing up with FASD. There will also be discussions about problems with alcohol use in teens with FASD.
The conference is hosted by Emory University School of Medicine http://www.psychiatry.emory.edu/PROGRAMS/GADrug/
and Marcus Autism Center http://www.marcus.org/default.aspx?id=38.
