(HealthNewsDigest.com) – October marks the start of the fall running season, which is why it is the perfect time to address the connection between varicose veins and running. I have read where many people actually say the opposite but if you know that varicose veins are caused by poor circulation, you would understand why running would actually help circulation within the legs. When you run the venous muscles in the calves and the feet pump the blood through the veins to the heart, says Dr. Navarro. Other factors that can accelerate and aggravate the appearance of veins, beyond gravity and age, include: genetics, pregnancy, birth control pills, hormone therapy, obesity, lack of exercise, weight fluctuation, constipation, and prolonged periods of sitting or standing. Varicose veins develop due to a weakening of vein valves and vein walls. The weakening of the valves causes the blood to pool and stretching the vein causing it to protrude through the skin.
Varicose and spider veins affect roughly 50% of the female population. These are dilated capillaries less than 2mm in diameter located just below the surface of the skin most commonly found on the legs and occasionally on the face. Spider veins are blue, red or purplish in color with a web-like or linear appearance. Varicose veins are abnormally swollen or stretched veins that protrude from the surface of the skin, typically in a rope-like manner usually occurring on the legs.
Some amazing procedures to get rid of these pesky veins include:
Sclerotherapy or “injection therapy” can successfully treat 90% of all varicose veins and nearly 100% of spider veins safely, effectively and painlessly- with excellent cosmetic results. The procedure is simple. A mild chemical solution is injected into the affected vein, causing the walls of the vein to become irritated and collapse. The vein is then absorbed in the body’s natural healing process. The blood from the closed vein is rerouted to a healthy vein, thereby restoring proper circulation. Following the injections, the leg is wrapped with an elastic bandage for several hours. Over the next two to three weeks the treated veins begin to heal and disappear. Different solutions, concentrations, and techniques can be used for optimum results, depending upon the size of the damaged vein, the color of the patient’s skin and the patients healing potential. The Vein Treatment Center also utilizes a specialized technique known as foam sclerotherapy, in which the liquid sclerosing agent is converted to a foam-like substance, which is ideal for closing larger veins and can be visualized and controlled by ultrasound.
Ambulatory phlebectomy and Endolaser are performed on varicose veins that are too large to be treated with sclerotherapy. They are both done in-office, under local anesthesia. Endolaser, is a treatment created and developed at The Vein Treatment Center that uses laser energy to seal the affected vein. Phlebectomy involves removing the faulty portion of the vein through minute incisions that heal leaving minimal scars. These procedures require only a small nick in the skin, local anesthesia, and no hospital visit or stitches Sclerotherapy still remains the gold standard for the treatment of unsightly small and medium size spider veins above and beyond laser emitted on the surface of the skin which we have not found to be as effective.
Although varicose and spider veins can never be completely prevented, there are ways to slow the progression of the disease including getting regular exercise, wearing graduated compression stockings, monitoring your hormone intake, elevating your legs and eating a proper diet that is high in fiber and low in salt. However, the best prevention always is to seek treatment in the early stages of the disease. Research shows, unfortunately many Latinas who suffer from varicose veins often dismiss the enlarged leg veins as a cosmetic issue without recognizing they can lead to more serious venous disease. Untreated varicose veins can lead to conditions such as eczema, hyper pigmentation, sores, skin ulcers, swelling, painful rashes and even increased potential for blood clots that can travel to the heart or lungs.
Dr. Luis Navarro, Director of The Vein Treatment Center in New York, NY, one of the most well-respected and established physicians in the country, has devoted his life’s work to the treatment of venous disorders (varicose and spider veins). Formally schooled at the University of Barcelona, he came to New York in 1969 where he began his surgical training at Mount Sinai Hospital. His interest in phlebology flourished and by the late 1970’s, while practicing as a general surgeon, he began to investigate and develop new approaches to treating varicose and spider veins. At the same time he became one of the first members of the American College of Phlebology, a society dedicated to the research and treatment of venous disorders.
Dr. Navarro’s facility, the Vein Treatment Center, remains one of first and only facilities exclusively devoted to the treatment of venous disorders. www.VeinTreatmentCenter.com
