First and Only Device of its Kind to Receive FDA Indication for Facial Lifting

(HealthNewsDigest.com) – New York, October 19, 2010 – NYU Langone Medical Center’s Trinity faculty practice office in New York City is offering a new, non-surgical ultrasound face-lifting technology called the Ulthera® System (Ulthera, Inc., Mesa, AZ). This nonsurgical cosmetic procedure for facial rejuvenation is the first and only device of its kind to receive an FDA indication for lifting of facial tissues.
Ultherapy™ delivers acoustic sound waves deep into the facial skin and soft tissue to thermally activate the body’s own rejuvenative mechanisms. A novel ultrasound imaging technique is used for visualizing the layers of soft tissue in patients before treatment.
“Most of the current laser and energy delivery devices have been focused on treating only the superficial skin layer,” says Matthew White, MD, assistant professor at NYU Langone Medical Center who practices at the NYU Trinity Center and authored the first paper in the medical literature describing the device (Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery, 2007). “This new technology allows us to precisely focus in on the deep SMAS layer – the collagen-filled connective tissue layer — that surgeons pull tighter when performing a facelift. This deep-plane treatment results in an unprecedented lifting of face and neck skin.”
A typical treatment lasts 30-40 minutes, and most patients see an improvement immediately after treatment. Individuals may experience mild redness of the skin after treatment that typically resolves after one hour. A benefit of the procedure is that patients can quickly resume their daily activities without restrictions. Full effects are apparent after approximately three months – the time required for collagen rejuvenation.
“Delivering energy at a depth, while not harming the overlying tissue, is truly a remarkable feat of engineering,” states Dr. White. “Results are not as dramatic as one can anticipate with a facelift, but more natural and subtle appearing.”
