(HealthNewsDigest.com) – State College, Pa. — 21 December 2010 — AccuWeather.com reports for millions of you dreaming of a white Christmas, your dream will come true.
AccuWeather.com Chief Long Range Forecaster Joe Bastardi predicted in November that more than 50 percent of the contiguous United States would be covered with snow.
With snowcover on the lower 48 nearing the mark, and with a cross-country Christmas snowstorm expected this week, the 50 percent threshold will almost certainly be met and even exceeded.
The average snow coverage by Christmas Day is usually between 25 and 35 percent, according to meteorologist Heather Buchman.
The 50 percent mark was actually surpassed on Dec. 19, when snowcover was 52.5 percent, according to the National Operational Hydrologic Remote Sensing Center (NOHRSC).
As of Dec. 21, the first day of astronomical winter, the NOHRSC reported 46 percent snowcover, down from 48 percent the day before.
However, a Christmas week storm is on its way for the Plains, Midwest and East Coast, bringing locally heavy snow. This storm will likely add snowcover to the blank areas on the map, namely the Plains states.
AccuWeather.com meteorologists predict more than 50 percent snowcover will result from this storm.
The storm could also fill in the holes along the Eastern Seaboard and pile more snow on existing snowcover.
