Dental Line Containing Bioactive Ingredient NovaMin Launched at Nation’s Largest Dental Meeting
NUPRO Sensodyne Prophylaxis Paste and Sensodyne NUPRO Professional Toothpaste Provide Continuum of Care from Dental Office to Home

(HealthNewsDigest.com) – Dentsply International, the world’s largest professional dental products company, in collaboration with GlaxoSmithKline, introduced a new treatment containing the bioactive ingredient NovaMin that immediately relieves dental sensitivity, bridging what consumers do at home with how they are professionally treated by their dentist. The treatment was launched at the country’s largest dental meeting, Chicago Dental Society Midwinter Meeting, February 24-26, 2011.
NovaMin is a calcium phosphate technology that releases calcium and phosphate ions upon contact with moisture (saliva) and has been shown to create a mineral layer on dentin that immediately relieves sensitivity—eroded dentin exposes nerve endings. (NovaMin was originally developed to aid in repairing bone.) NUPRO Sensodyne Prophylaxis Paste for use by dentists and hygienists for teeth cleaning, stain removal and sensitivity relief is the only prophylaxis paste to contain Novamin. It is dye and gluten free. The new treatment is the first targeted to the consumer by $2.2 billion Dentsply in collaboration with GlaxoSmithKline’s Sensodyne (Glaxo and Dentsply announced their collaboration in January).
Four out of five people will suffer from tooth sensitivity at some point. Dentists and researchers say this surge in tooth pain is due to dentin (i.e. tooth) erosion due in part to teeth whitening, the consumption of acidic soda and sports drinks including those that are sugar-free, the prevalence of orthodontic procedures, stress related teeth grinding, periodontal disease, and aging, among other causes. Sensitivity is particularly on the rise among 20-to 50-year olds.
NUPRO Sensodyne Prophy Paste provides immediate sensitivity relief. Under laboratory conditions, teeth treated with NUPRO Sensodyne sustained tubule occlusion after polishing and also in a five-minute “acid challenge” with orange juice (average pH 3.85) and Coca-Cola (average pH 2.48). Other products showed limited to no tubule occlusion in 5 minutes at any stage of the demonstration, according to data from Dentsply.
NovaMin relieves sensitivity while amplifying the natural protective and repair mechanisms of saliva. Teeth are subjected to cycles of mineral loss (demineralization) and gain (remineralization) due to eating and drinking. Demineralization can lead to exposed dentin tubules on the tooth surface, which may cause dentin hypersensitivity. Remineralization plays an important role in preventive dentistry.
The Journal of Clinical Dentistry (Volume XXI, 2010, Number 3) devoted an entire special issue demonstrating NovaMin’s efficacy.
