(HealthNewsDigest.com) – Malibu – June 21, 2011 – An estimated 50 million Americans dined out on Father’s Day, according to the National Restaurant Association, so California’s new landmark food safety bill, SB 602, couldn’t have come at a better time. The new law requires that all employees who handle food in restaurants get a California Food Handler Card. A food handler is defined by the law as a person who is involved in the preparation, storage or service of food in a food facility. This includes most restaurant employees, such as wait staff, chefs, head cooks, cooks, bussers, bartenders, hosts/hostesses who handle food and supervisory personnel, such as the general manager.
Jeff Nelken, M.A., RD, a food safety expert and coach and LA County Health Department Certified Trainer, and member of Tellem Worldwide’s Food Issue Group, is offering the California Food Handler Card through online eLearning at www.foodsafetycoach.com. The training is only $15.00 in English or Spanish.
“We’re also pleased to offer in-house classes at restaurants or chambers of commerce – anywhere large groups of food handlers can get together at one time,” said Nelken. These classes are $45 per person. California is home to more than 1.4 million food industry jobs, so SB 602 will go a long way to improve overall food safety. “Local health departments will ensure food facilities meet their obligations under the law including ensuring food handlers have a valid food handler card, and keeping records that can be provided to local enforcement officers upon request.,” Nelken said.
Tellem Worldwide (http://www.tellem.com), a PR, social media and crisis management agency, established its Food Issues Group in 2003 with Nelken’s help to offer consumer education, crisis preparedness and management, as well as bioterrorism education and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) plan development. Our crisis management expertise can help companies navigate from crisis to calm. It’s hard to stay focused on business when reporters are clamoring for information. That’s where we come in.”
Tellem’s Food Issues Group focuses on educating those in the food business how they can avoid food borne illnesses. The agency also offers publicity, Facebook and Twitter expertise for restaurants and food companies, media relations support prior to or during a crisis, and through Nelken’s expertise, help restaurants and food trucks on how to keep an “A” grade. Emphasis is on building customer satisfaction and loyalty, while at the same time increasing traffic and sales.
