(HealthNewsDigest.com) – New aesthetic treatments, topical products and home care options abound for common skin problems that can arise from your teens to social security.
You’ve Got Large Pores
Pores can be invisible on dry skin or tight, firm young skin. But if you have oily or thick skin, pores tends to become more noticeable over time. Causes of large pores can include genetics, sun damage, and aging. As you age, the skin’s surface thickens which makes pores more visible. Lack of consistent exfoliation also contributes to pores looking larger because oil and debris collect without sufficient shedding. You cannot really shrink your pores, but there are things that will help keep them open and unclogged.
Exfoliate with regular mild glycolic or salicylic acid peels or microdermabrasion treatments to keep pores clean. A Clarisonic Sonic Skincare System ($225) is ideal to deep clean, especially for oily skin types. A series of IPL (intense pulsed light) treatments will also help keep skin firm and toned so pores looks tighter and smoother. At home, use glycolic acid daily such as DDF Glycolic 5% Pads ($35) or Peter Thomas Roth Max Complexion Correction Pads ($36), or a salicylic acid exfoliator like Kate Sommerville ExfoliKate Acne Clearing Exfoliator Treatment ($65).
You’ve Got Brown Spots
Many years of cumulative sun exposure can cause pigmentation, discoloration, patches and dark spots to appear, especially on skin areas that tend to get more UV rays, like face, chest and hands. Old sun damage comes to the surface of the skin, causing a steady supply of uneven pigmentation. It can also be caused by hormonal flux as in the onset of menopause, and certain medications may make skin more prone to hyperpigmentation. A medium depth peel, such as the Skinmedica Vitalize Peel, from a professional medical aesthetician or physician can reduce brown patches and reveal younger looking, clearer skin after one treatment. Many lasers also work well to reduce pigment. According to New York Plastic Surgeon Dr. Bryan G. Forley (http://www.drforley.com), “Fraxel Re:Store Dual Wavelength effectively addresses pigmentation and dyschromia with minimal downtime.”
Daily use of a high SPF30+ is mandatory to prevent discoloration from getting darker and new patches from appearing. The new Elure Advanced Skin Lightening System ($150 for the Lotion or Cream, $35 for the Facial Wash) can help reduce discoloration in four to eight weeks of daily application. As New York Dermatologist Dr. Lori Brightman (http://www.laserskinsurgery.com) says, “Elure is a new topical therapy for skin lightening which is an enzyme based topical that works by breaking down pigment that already exists in our skin. This is a very different way of reducing pigment compared to hydroquinone.”
You’ve Got Redness
As skin thins with age, tiny spider veins appear closer to the surface, giving skin a more ruddy look. Couperose skin is also inherited, more common in lighter skin types, and can be related to hormonal flux. Fair skin individuals tend to have more flushing and signs of rosacea than darker skin, although anyone can be affected. Sun exposure is another culprit, and reactive skin can be made worse by using harsh skin treatments and overly aggressive therapy. Syneron – Candela VBeam laser is known as the dermatologist’s treatment of choice for redness and facial veins. After each treatment session, you can expect to see some visible clearing and results are best achieved with multiple treatments.
Use products that are hypoallergenic, contain few and pure ingredients, and avoid fragrance or ingredients that can cause irritation. Avoid soap or detergents that dry out skin and keep your complexion protected from environmental irritants. Avene Diroseal Anti-Redness Skincare Lotion ($46) helps keep redness under control daily, and June Jacobs Redness Diffusing Masque ($56) is formulated with loads of antioxidants especially to fight redness. Look for non-chemical sunscreens that contain zinc or titanium dioxide and deliver UVA/UVB protection, such as MD SolarSciences Mineral Screen Lotion SPF40 ($36) is a good option. Mineral makeup is ideal for skin that is prone to redness because it is feather light and offers good coverage, such as Cover FX Total Coverage Cream Foundation SPF 30 ($42).
