(HealthNewsDigest.com) – Many people feel pain but when it is vague, and hard to pinpoint the source, it is therefore difficult to treat. We use terminology such as “chronic fatigue syndrome” to cover a wide swath, but often, those who are suffering don’t really care what it is called – they simply want to feel relief.
The key is establishing an accurate diagnosis. Some physicians may be quick to determine a blanket diagnosis such as fibromyalgia, but a pain specialist can perform a more thorough evaluation and can often detect an underlying cause of pain that was not initially seen. For the patient, who may face skepticism that his or her pain is real, this can be tremendously helpful.
With a correct diagnosis, patients then have several opportunities for relief. First and foremost, there are so many new processes and procedures that can relive pain that the patient may be out of the woods much quicker than he or she thought possible. In addition, there are services that can be used by people who have a particular condition, from handicapped parking to insurance covered-wheelchairs that can be of great assistance. It is also important for a patient’s mental health that a diagnosis confirms that yes, this person does have a condition. Sympathy is an amazing healing agent. These individuals need to explain to others that they are under the care of a specialist who has expertise with their type of problem, and that they have been accurately diagnosed and are receiving appropriate treatment from a knowledgeable provider. Finally, finding a right diagnosis will help a doctor treat the pain without interference from unknown underlying causes.
Pain can be tricky. All of us need to make decisions each time we experience pain. Do we say “It’s the ordinary pains of daily life – it’ll pass?” Or do we acknowledge the pain and see a doctor? We don’t want to run to a physician for every headache or sore muscle – but left undiagnosed, minor pain can ultimately get worse.
There are a few pains that must be evaluated immediately. Chest pain is one such ailment. Not all chest pain means heart problems, but anyone who has chest pains should know why – the consequences of not knowing could be deadly.
Stomach pain that is short term is generally an “upset stomach.” Pain that is prolonged and associated with fever demands attention.
Similarly, head pain needs to be in short duration, and similar to pains in the past. If it isn’t, it must be evaluated.
