I love to try new foods. Some are great. Some don’t measure up and some become staples in my kitchen. See what you think.

(HealthNewsDigest.com) – I’m a big fan of Greek-style yogurt, as I’m sure many of you are, too. Typical Greek yogurt is very thick with the same creamy texture as sour cream. The principle difference between making regular yogurt and Greek yogurt is that after the milk is heated and cultured, it is drained to remove some of the extra whey (liquid) providing a thicker mixture.
Every so often you find a new brand of an old favorite food and you are surprised that something you like has gotten even better. Karoun Mediterranean Style Yogurt is excellent. It is creamy and thick and the texture does not break down or weep after the yogurt culture has been compromised by scooping out a portion. It is made of hormone-free (rBST) cow’s milk, has live probiotic cultures, and is kosher (OU) certified. It comes in Nonfat, Lowfat, and Whole Milk plain-flavored varieties.
Nonfat: 1 cup serving has 140 calories, 0.5 grams of fat, 13 grams of protein, 19 grams of carb, no fiber, 450 milligrams of calcium, 620 milligrams of potassium and 200 milligrams of sodium.
Lowfat (2%): 1 cup serving has 180 calories, 5 grams of fat, 11 grams of protein, 16 grams of carb, no fiber, 400 milligrams of calcium, 530 milligrams of potassium and 170 milligrams of sodium.
Whole Milk: 1 cup serving has 210 calories, 12 grams of fat, 11 grams of protein, 15 grams of carb, no fiber, 400 milligrams of calcium, 490 milligrams of potassium and 170 milligrams of sodium.
Labne Kefir Cheese is another Karoun product that is definitely worth a try. It is a spreadable yogurt cheese. It has a tangy taste and is creamier and thicker than yogurt, similar to soft cream cheese. For cream cheese lovers, this is great substitute. A 2 tablespoon (1 ounce) serving has 80 calories, 5 grams of fat, 2 grams of protein, 2 grams of carb, no fiber, 60 milligrams of calcium, and 25 milligrams of sodium. An equal serving of regular cream cheese has 100 calories and 10 grams of fat, and far more sodium, depending on the brand you choose.
Labne melts well and pairs well with jam or preserves or fresh fruit slices. It is a healthier choice than cream cheese for children’s snacks. It is made from hormone-free milk, contains live probiotic cultures, and is kosher (OU) certified.
