(HealthNewsDigest.com) – ALEXANDRIA, Va. – The Meals On Wheels Association of America (MOWAA) today announced a new national campaign to raise awareness for the issue of senior hunger in America, which affects a shocking one in nine seniors today. “We Are Meals On Wheels” encourages individuals to join MOWAA’s movement to respond to the nearly 6 million individuals over the age of 60 who are at the risk of hunger in the U.S. To bring attention to this issue, MOWAA has released an animated video that showcases the scope of the problem, power of its volunteer network, and encourages others to be a part of a solution to end senior hunger by 2020.
“The seniors in our country that face the threat of hunger are the people who raised us, fought our wars, and it is a travesty to think that in this, the richest nation on Earth, these are the very same people who go to bed hungry night after night. It has to stop,” said MOWAA President and CEO Enid Borden. “I mean it when I say that I want to put myself out of business by ending senior hunger in America. That is why we are asking everyone to join us. Be a part of the solution and help us end senior hunger by the year 2020.”
Through the “We Are Meals on Wheels” campaign, the organization hopes to attract new donors and volunteers, and to ensure that local Meals On Wheels programs have the resources and capacity to deliver meals to every senior in need. Meals On Wheels programs are unique in that each program delivers nutritious meals to seniors who would otherwise go hungry – seniors who no longer have the means and/or mobility to leave their homes to buy food or cook for themselves. MOWAA volunteers who deliver meals are also often the first line of care and social interaction for many of these seniors.
The “We Are Meals On Wheels” campaign was made possible through a grant from the Walmart Foundation In 2010, Walmart committed $2 billion to fight hunger in the U.S. The Walmart Foundation’s grant has enabled MOWAA to provide social media training and campaign materials, such as public service announcements, to local programs. It will also help MOWAA provide grants to outstanding local programs over the coming months.
