Psychotherapist, divorce coach uses Twelve-Step model to heal, move on
|
(HealthNewsDigest.com) – GARRISON, N.Y. – According to the Americans for Divorce Reform, nearly 41 percent of first marriages in the United States end in divorce today. But what matters more is how those who divorce decide to navigate it.
Micki McWade, LMSW, psychotherapist and collaborative divorce coach, offers a program and resources to move through the pain of divorce, and after awhile, learn to reinvent life in the process.
“Divorce is deeply painful and disorienting,” says McWade. “People lose track of who they are in the new context, and it affects how one relates to everyone in their life. Anyone going through it can use guidance and reorientation. Divorce is here to stay, so we have to learn to do it better to ensure a clean and sane recovery – for both adults and their children.”
McWade provides readers with the tools to handle divorce in a healthier and supportive way in her three-book series and divorce recovery program: Getting Up, Getting Over, Getting On: A Twelve-Step Guide to Divorce Recovery, Daily Meditations for Surviving a Breakup, Separation or Divorce and Healing You, Healing Me: A Divorce Support Group Leader’s Guide.
Having been through a divorce herself, McWade believes that divorce, while difficult to deal with in any family, is also an opportunity to build a new, positive reality in time. Her books and recovery program help those coping with divorce identify what can and cannot be controlled as well as how their lives can be made better and more productive.
McWade facilitated a Twelve-Step Divorce Recovery Group for nine years. She witnessed how being together with others and learning new ways of thinking supported group members during a highly stressful time. In addition to her series, she hopes to help people establish divorce recovery support groups across the country.
“I reinvented myself after my divorce,” McWade says. “I went back to school and found a career I love. Others can too. Divorce is not the end: it’s a doorway to a new reality.”
