(HealthNewsDigest.com) – The American Nurses Association (ANA) has launched its 2011-2012 seasonal influenza campaign, “Unite to Fight the Flu,” calling on nurses to serve as leaders and role models in promoting this safe and effective disease prevention strategy. The campaign urges everyone over the age of six months to get vaccinated against influenza, as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The campaign features a Seasonal Influenza Toolkit based on five themes for nurses:
Vaccinate against influenza for protection of self and patients;
Collaborate with co-workers and colleagues to promote influenza vaccination;

Encourage patients, family, and communities to be vaccinated;
Advocate for enhanced immunization access through the use of standing orders; and

Use a safety needle to prevent needlestick injuries.
The toolkit includes a video message to nurses from ANA President Karen Daley and a vaccine safety video featuring nurse-to-nurse dialogue addressing reasons health care workers decline to get vaccinated. ANA is pleased that the latest CDC seasonal influenza vaccination survey of health care workers showed a 69.8 percent rate for nurses — a jump compared to previous rates in the 50 percent range — and urges nurses to continue the trend by getting vaccinated for the 2011-12 season.
