I love to try new foods. Some are great. Some don’t measure up and some become staples in my kitchen. See what you think.

(HealthNewsDigest.com) – Forget acai, pomegranates and gogi berries. US grown tart cherries, available year round, are tiny nutrition powerhouses. Over 75 research studies dating from the 1950s have shown that compounds in cherries possess anti-inflammatory, anti-aging, and anti-cancer properties. The pigment that gives cherries their bright red color has extraordinary antioxidant capacity.
The use of oxygen in the body is critical to life. But, in the process free radicals are formed. These renegade oxygen compounds can damage the body and promote disease. Antioxidants, natural plant compounds, deactivate damaging free radicals and protect the body.
The antioxidant capacity of a food is measured by ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) units. The higher the ORAC score the better. Researches suggest we consume 3,000 to 5,000 ORAC units a day. Enter Very Cherre 100% Premium Tart Cherry Juice with an ORAC score of 2,900 units in an 8-ounce serving.
Old Orchard has introduced the Very Cherre line of juices made from Montmorency tart cherries. You should know that tart cherries are not really very tart and are seldom sold fresh. They are the cherries typically used to make pie filling and are widely available dried, frozen, canned or as juice or juice concentrate.
The Old Orchard Very Cherre line includes:
100% Premium Tart Cherry Juice with 130 calories in an 8-ounce serving, no fat or protein, 33 grams of carb, 25 grams of sugar (all from the cherries, there is no added sweeteners), 100 milligrams of potassium, and 45 milligrams of sodium. The ORAC score per serving is 2,900 units.
100% Juice Tart Cherry/Pomegranate Juice with the same nutrition profile as Tart Cherry Juice. The ORAC score is 3,100 units because two antioxidant sources are combined to make this juice.
100% Tart Cherry/Cranberry Juice, with the same nutrition profile as Tart Cherry Juice, has an ORAC score of 3,300 units.
100% Juice Tart Cherry/Blueberry, with the same nutrition profile as Tart Cherry Juice, has an ORAC score of 3,700 units.
Each flavor has no added sugar, flavors, colors or preservatives. The flavors are sold in 64-ounce bottles on the juice aisle of the supermarket. All the flavors are best chilled before drinking. If you find the Tart Cherry Juice too tart for your taste mix it with water, sparkling water, or another juice. It is excellent as a cocktail mixer.
I mixed it with sparkling water and a squeeze of orange for a refreshing cool drink. I also mixed it half and half with lemonade to punch up the health factor. The Tart Cherry Juice can be frozen in an ice cube tray to flavor plain water or another drink to give an added nutrition kick. The cherry cubes are a fun addition to orange juice for breakfast.
If you are interested in good health and planet-friendly eating, try Very Cherre Tart Cherry Juice, made from a home grown superfruit.
