I love to try new foods. Some are great. Some don’t measure up and some become staples in my kitchen. See what you think.

(HealthNewsDigest.com) – MojoMilk is a probiotic enhanced chocolate milk alternative. Premier High Protein Shakes are milk-based sports drink. Why should you consider using either of the products and what are their nutrition benefits?
MojoMilk has fewer calories than most chocolate milk brands while providing probiotics. Why is this important? Probiotics are forms of friendly bacteria that live in our digestive tract and help to strengthen our immune system by protecting us against unfriendly bacteria. Maintaining an adequate amount of friendly bacteria in our gut is critical to good health.
Each serving of MojoMilk delivers 2 billion CFU (colony forming units) of GanedenBC30 (bacillus coagulans), a patented and clinically studied probiotic strain. GanedanBC30 is a very useful strain of probiotics because it is shelf stable and survives during both food processing and digestion. Because our stomachs are very acidic, many of the probiotics added to food do not survive the digestive process in large numbers. Up to 78% of GanedenBC30 survives the journey through the stomach so that it can colonize the lower gut, promoting digestive health and enhancing our natural immune system.
MojoMilk comes in handy single serve packets that are simply added to milk – whole, lowfat or skim. It can also be added to lactose-reduced milk, soy milk or other milk substitutes.
The mix adds only 20 calories, 1 gram of fat, 2 grams of sugar (equal to ½ teaspoon) and 40 milligrams potassium and 40 milligrams of sodium to the calories found in an 8-ounce glass of milk. When added to nonfat milk the entire servings equals 110 calories, far less than a similar size serving found in most other chocolate milk brands.
As parents we would prefer that our children drink regular milk. But the sad truth is that milk drinking is declining in this country. By the time kids are preteens, they are drinking more soda than milk. Most kids, however, like chocolate milk and when schools remove this option from the school cafeteria milk consumption plummets. A lower calorie, probiotic-enhanced drink like MojoMilk is a far healthier alternative than soda or sweetened fruit drinks.
Numerous studies have suggested that lowfat milk is an excellent post-exercise drink to maximize hydration and muscle recovery. Premier High Protein Shakes are made of a protein blend that is based on milk protein. Strawberry, the newest flavor, adds to the product line of Chocolate and Vanilla (launched in early 2011).
All three flavors have a similar nutrition profile and all are fortified with 25% of the Daily Value of the following nutrients: vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin E, vitamin K, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, B6, B12, folate, pantothenic acid, biotin, calcium, iron, phosphorus, iodine, magnesium, zinc, selenium, copper, manganese, chromium and molybdenum.
The Strawberry flavor is packed in a 11-ounce shelf-stable box with 160 calories (similar to the amount of calories found in a glass of whole milk), 3 grams of fat (1 gram is saturated fat), 25 milligrams of cholesterol, no trans fat, 30 grams of protein (the upper limit suggested for maximum utilization by the body at one feeding), 3 grams of carb, 1 gram of sugar, 2 grams of fiber, 390 milligrams of potassium and 330 milligrams of sodium.
The company recommends that all the protein shake flavors be chilled before drinking. We found the strawberry shake had a pleasant, not overly sweet flavor, with a slight undercurrent of chalkiness which is typical of high-protein drinks. Chilled very cold improved the flavor. Premier Nutrition also makes protein bars and energy shots.
