(HealthNewsDigeswt.com) – There may be a reason why your hoarseness, postnasal drip, sinusitis, allergies, asthma, sore throat, and cough don’t respond to traditional treatments. You could be one of almost 125-million Americans whose source of misery begins with the consequences of what you eat. That’s right, the back-up of the stomach contents into the throat causing laryngopharyngeal reflux, the medical term for reflux into the throat. LPR is also known as airway reflux and silent reflux. “Silent” describes LPR reflux when a person is unaware that the problem is actually acid reflux.
Dr. Jamie Koufman, a pioneering laryngologist and director of the Voice Institute of New York, has made it her professional mission to connect the dots between the jaw-dropping 850 percent increase in reflux-related esophageal cancer and the acidification of the American diet since the 1970s. The clues lay in the tissues of the larynx or voice box that show evidence of a digestive enzyme called pepsin. You guessed it, pepsin is manufactured in the stomach, and the backflow of stomach acid and pepsin is corrosive. Once absorbed by tissue, this powerful duo can cause symptoms, such as breathing difficulties, cough, hoarseness, sore throat, and eventually—cancer.
To help patients overcome acid forms of acid reflux, both classic and silent, Dr. Koufman developed a two-week detox program consisting of a low-acid, low-fat, pH-balanced diet, which has seen resounding success in hundreds of her patients, including professional singers and opera stars who thought their careers were over. The prestigious Annals of Otology, Rhinology & Laryngology published the findings of a study with 20 medically unresponsive LPR in which 95 percent saw an improvement in symptoms after her special, two-week, low-acid diet.
In order to educate the public about acid reflux and the benefits of the low-acid, low-fat diet, Dr. Koufman, wrote DROPPING ACID: The Reflux Diet Cookbook & Cure, a crash course on acid reflux, which covers everything from the history of the disease to helpful takeaways, including:
Symptoms of Reflux: Hoarseness, chronic throat-clearing, cough, choking episodes, trouble swallowing, a lump-in-the-throat sensation, post-nasal drip, sinusitis, asthma, sore throat, heartburn, and indigestion.
Quick Fixes: Quit smoking, don’t wear clothing that is too tight, don’t exercise directly after a meal, don’t lie down right after eating or within three hours of bedtime, elevate the head of your bed if you’re a nighttime refluxer – these are all steps to take to bring some relief
Acid Detox: For two weeks, avoid consuming any acidic foods (nothing below pH 4), and fill your meals with the “Best Foods List,” including fish, poultry, tofu, melons, bananas, oatmeal, whole-grains breads and cereals, mushrooms, and greens.
Bad Foods: Surrender foods such as fried food, chocolate, soda pop and other soft drinks. Specifically, consume nothing out of a bottle or a can except for water.
75 Original Recipes: Delicious, flavorful, and creative recipes leave you satisfied and reflux-free.
