Sexy Mastectomy Bra? Breast Cancer Survivors Ask Victoria’s Secret for ‘Survivor Line’

(HealthNewsDigest.com) – RICHMOND, VA – The daughter of a breast cancer survivor has launched a popular Change.org petitioncalling on Victoria’s Secret to create a line of “Survivor Bras,” fitted for women like her mom who have undergone mastectomy surgery.

Allana Maiden was only 6 years old when her mom, Debbie, was first treated for breast cancer. Several rounds of chemo, a mastectomy, and 21 cancer-free years later, Allana now watches her mom struggle to find bras that fit her shape.

Allana says she started her campaign on Change.org because breast cancer survivors are currently relegated to two bra options: cheap, unattractive mastectomy bras, or expensive, prettier bras by boutique designers.

“Victoria’s Secret is supposed to make women feel beautiful, yet the women that deserve that feeling the most get left out,” Allana said. “Every woman knows someone that has been impacted by breast cancer, and women are passionate about this cause. What better way to give back to women than to help cancer survivors feel good about themselves?”

Allana believes Victoria’s Secret has good reason to add a “Survivor Line” of mastectomy bras. The company has participated in breast cancer awareness campaigns in the past, she says. The website for their “Think Pink” campaign in 2012, which they say has donated more than $1.1 million to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and the American Cancer Society, notes that “breast cancer is an issue close to many of us.”

Already, more than 16,000 people have signed Allana’s petition, which she launched just two weeks ago. Each signature and personal comment on the petition are sent via email to executives at Victoria’s Secret and its parent company, Limited Brands.  Victoria’s Secret executives have yet to respond to Allana’s campaign.

“Allana clearly isn’t the only one who wants Victoria’s Secret to offer a ‘Survivor Line,'” said Stephanie Feldstein, Senior Campaigner at Change.org.  “Her petition is filled with personal comments from survivors and their families expressing how much a move from Victoria’s Secret would mean to them.  It’ll be interesting to see where this campaign goes – not sure Victoria’s Secret will be able to keep quiet on this for much longer.”
