Do I Really Need a Nose Job?

(HealthNewsDigest.com) – The decision on whether or not to have a nose job may sound pretty simple, that is unless it is your nose.  Every year in the United States, close to 250,000 people choose to have Rhinoplasty; it is one of the most common invasive cosmetic surgeries – and one of the most personal.

There are two main reasons someone will start to consider a Rhinoplasty.  More often than not, patients who consider a Rhinoplasty are experiencing an aesthetic issue with their nose; these factors can include a humped or crooked bridge, bulbous tip, or long nose.  Either problem may be congenital – something you are born with, or are the result of trauma – such as a car accident.

Some patients consider a nose job because they are experiencing a functional nose problem, such as snoring or difficulty breathing.  Frequently, patients suffer from both a physical impairment and a less-than-desirable appearance.  The extent of correction will affect they type of nasal surgery that is needed, but a cosmetic surgeon can often address both concerns in one surgical procedure.

So how do you know the choice for Rhinoplasty is right for you? Take minute to ask yourself a few important questions:

  1. Do you have realistic expectations?

Are you aware of both the benefits from a nose job, as well as the limitations of surgery?  Cosmetic Surgeons are not magicians, and while the desired correction is often attainable, your doctor cannot give you a brand new nose.

  1. Are you getting a nose job to please someone else?

Having Rhinoplasty to make someone else happy will never work; possibly leaving you feeling manipulated and miserable.  On the other hand, if you have always thought how wonderful a tweak of your nose could be, a Rhinoplasty may be right for you.

  1. Have you considered all of the potential risks?

A nose job is a major, invasive surgical procedure; it should never be entered into without considering the rare, but real, possible complications.  Discuss the risks of Rhinoplasty with your cosmetic surgeon, and as a team assess how these may impact your post-surgical outcome.
