It’s a popular cosmetic procedure that helps add shape and size to breasts that don’t meet a woman’s expectations. Sometimes, however, women seek this surgery because one breast is dramatically smaller than the other.
Problems with Asymmetrical Breasts
During puberty, it’s normal for a young girl to have asymmetrical breasts. As they grow, the breasts tend to even out. Approximately one out of four girls, however, experience breast hypertrophy. With breast hypertrophy, the tissue in one breast grows too fast, and the breasts end up being two different cup sizes.
It’s important to note that some breast asymmetry is normal and common. And while it’s possible to find bras with different cup sizes, women with pronounced breast asymmetry often feel embarrassed and they may even avoid sexual relationships. Asymmetrical breasts can really damage self-esteem and limit clothing choices and activities.
Breast Augmentation Explained
With a breast augmentation surgery, the plastic surgeon inserts saline or silicone implants over or under the pectoral muscle. This enhances the size and shape of the breast. It also helps even out the size of a smaller breast caused by breast hypertrophy.
During the consultation, the doctor shows you the different types of implants and discusses your ideal size after taking measurements. You want breasts that match your proportions. You also talk about the ideal profile. High profile breast implants look round and project more. Moderate profiles look more natural, but they do not sit as high on the chest. The doctor discusses the risks, best location for the incision, and things you must do before and after the surgery.
A typical breast augmentation surgery takes 90 minutes. After anesthesia is administered, the doctor makes the incisions in one of four places. It may be made along the areola (periareolar), along the lower crease of the breast (inframammary), or in the armpit (transaxillary). Some doctors make the incision at the belly button and then use a tube to insert the shell of a saline implant. The fourth option is less common.
Post-operative Care
Following a breast augmentation, stitches dissolve on their own, but you may have drains and protective bandages for up to a week. Return to the doctor to have them removed. Avoid normal activity for at least a week. Activities that require exertion of the upper body need to be avoided for up to a month.
Breast augmentation can be an excellent option or women with breast asymmetry. Women should keep in mind, however, that while asymmetry can be greatly improved, some minor difference in size or shape may still be present after surgery. Some women choose to augment both breasts for a more uniform appearance.
