LOGIC e-cigarettes according to Dr. Keith Ablow – Could be Most Effective Anti-Tobacco Tool We Have Ever Known
|
(HealthNewsDigest.com) – I believe e-cigarettes may turn out to be the most effective anti-tobacco tool we have ever known. By now most people have heard of e-cigarettes. These devices use a small, lithium battery that vaporizes water and Propylene Glycol, an FDA-approved food additive, and create “smoke.”
E-cigarettes also contain flavoring and different concentrations of nicotine (or none). When I heard from some of my patients who were tobacco smokers that they had tried e-cigarettes, then switched entirely from tobacco to them, then stopped the e-cigarettes, too-making them non-smokers-I became fascinated by their potential to prevent cancer, heart and lung disease.
Large scale trials of e-cigarettes to stop tobacco use and stop smoking altogether are virtually nonexistent. The National Institutes of Health have, seemingly, remained blind to mounting data (including recent data from the Mayo Clinic) that suggest e-cigarettes could be a powerful tool to stop tobacco use. Because of the lack of available data, I approached the makers of LOGIC e-cigarettes to fund an experiment. They agreed to do so, and to provide free samples.
I then did the following simple trial: I offered 20 tobacco smokers free samples of LOGIC. Seventeen of those individuals agreed to try them. I didn’t tell them much else, other than that I would continue providing free samples, if they asked.
The participants in this trial included people who had smoked between half-a-package and two packages of tobacco cigarettes a day. They were between the ages of 22 and 78. They had smoked tobacco from 4 to 40 years.
Here are the startling results after 90 days:
· 70 percent of the participants reported they had stopped using tobacco, entirely
· 47 percent of the participants not only stopped using tobacco, but also ended up setting aside their e-cigarettes-becoming non-smokers
Given this experience, and the frustration I have encountered using every other method in the past to get even a small percentage of my patients to quit tobacco, I am now convinced that e-cigarettes may be the most effective anti-tobacco tool we now have access to.
Why? E-cigarettes replicate several aspects of smoking tobacco. They look like tobacco cigarettes. They glow like tobacco cigarettes. They emit vapor. They taste like cigarettes. And, some varieties of e-cigarettes deliver nicotine.
It is now time for the National Institutes of Health to move quickly with large-scale trials to substantiate these findings. We could have a tool at hand to save millions of lives, billions of health care dollars and untold amounts of suffering.
