(HealthNewsDigest.com) – Working with annoying people increases employee health problems both mentally and physically. Identifying who the annoying co-workers are is not difficult. In fact, most people agree on what is annoying behavior. Below is a list of the top ten annoying behaviors, although there are at least several more that are not on the list.
- People who take credit for work they didn’t do.
- Coming to work sick.
- Talking on cell phones loudly or in the bathroom.
- Talking to co-workers and arguing about religious or political issues.
- Chewing gum loudly.
- Cooking fowl smelling foods in the employee kitchen.
- Sharing too much personal information with your co-workers.
- Condescending talk with your co-workers.
- Bullying/gossip behavior.
- Spamming your co-workers with mail they don’t need.
Job stress is a huge issue in the work situation. Working with someone that you aren’t comfortable with can find you dreading going to work, and feeling unfulfilled while you are there. Dealing with annoying people is difficult because you fear that stepping in may intensify rather than relieve the annoying person’s behavior. Below are suggestions of what will work best in dealing with an annoying co-worker.
*Keep it light. Use a sense of humor to de-stress the situation and as much as possible remember that you too may be annoying to other co-workers.
* Try to engage the annoying person in some sort of mutual ground. What are their hobbies or interests? If you can begin seeing them in other ways besides being annoying, it helps overlook the annoying behavior.
*Choose your battles wisely. Is the behavior such a big deal that you rush in and say something confrontational or possibly offensive? If it doesn’t decrease your ability to produce, it is wise to let it go.
* Know your moods. If you come to work and are feeling uptight, warn your co-worker ahead of time, which may help them modify their behavior.
*Talk to a trusted co-worker outside of the work place about the situation as many times this is enough to help you feel understood and listened to. Taking it outside of work will help prevent gossip in the workplace.
* When and if you confront, do so with the intention of letting your co-worker know you cannot get your work done. An example is gum smacking. This can become so annoying it distracts you from what you are working on.
* If your annoying co-worker continues their behavior with little or no respect for your feelings, taking it to a higher level may help. Many times, management can help by providing a change in environment by moving desks or people. This should be a last resort after trying other interventions.
Most of us have encountered an annoying co-worker at least once in our lives. We may have been an annoying co-worker as well. It is important that prior to judging someone’s behavior as annoying we consider if we are contributing to their behavior in any way. Tolerance has never been so important in the workplace, but when you sacrifice your productivity in an effort to tolerate, you need to intervene. Our job relies on our ability to be productive, and a pleasant work environment assures productivity. -Mary Jo Rapini
