(HealthNewsDigest.com) – As cold and flu season approaches, many people are already dreading the pain that comes with sinus headaches; however, when you feel a pain in your forehead or in your cheeks coming on, don’t automatically call your doctor and ask for antibiotics.
A recent study found that many “sinus headaches” are really unrecognized migraine headaches. That means that a number these headache sufferers are wasting time and money on medicine that will not truly treat their painful symptoms.
Dr. Jordan Pritikin, a board-certified otolaryngologist at The Chicago Nasal & Sinus Center, explains, “Many people often diagnose themselves with a sinus headache if they if have a headache high in their cheekbones or near their sinuses. However, migraine headaches often have the same presentation. Sinus headaches generally occur as a result of a sinus infection or an inability to tolerate barometric pressure changes. These headaches can be associated with nasal congestion and discolored nasal discharge or may be triggered by weather changes, flying or scuba diving. Migraine headaches can occur in the same location, but are characterized by throbbing pain, sensitivity to bright light and nausea. Since there is activation of autonomic nerve pathways with migraines, nasal congestion and a runny nose can accompany a migraine headache, and that makes things even more confusing.”
The good news is that if you correctly diagnose the source of your headache, you will be better able to quickly and effectively treat it. There are many things that can trigger migraines including certain foods and medications, lifestyle habits, and hormonal changes (which is why women are much more apt than men to get migraines).
Dr. Pritikin goes on to explain, “Migraine headaches cannot be effectively treated by sinus medication, and that’s why it’s best to see a doctor if you have recurring and debilitating headaches. There are treatment options available for both migraines and sinus headaches, but proper diagnosis is vital.”
Dr. Pritikin was recently on the faculty and a featured speaker at The Open Forum 2013 inColorado Springs, a national meeting of otolaryngologists focusing on cutting edge treatments for chronic sinusitis and a number of other sinus related conditions.
