(HealthNewsDigest.com) – The breast lift procedure is designed to uplift the breasts to create a more youthful, lifted appearance. It is an elective procedure that some women undergo because they may feel self-conscious if their breasts sag or droop. While sagging is a normal part of the aging process, both in the breast and in other areas of the body, excessive sagging can occur for a number of reasons, including past pregnancies and weight fluctuations, and at earlier ages. A breast lift will not stop the natural aging process, but it will raise the breasts to a more lifted and youthful position and, in turn, often enhance a woman’s self-confidence. Women that are planning to have more children are advised to postpone the procedure until they have completed their families.
The breast lift procedure takes about two hours to complete and is typically performed with general anesthesia. While incision patterns may vary, an anchor-shaped incision is commonly made which circles the areola, extends vertically downward and then ends horizontally along the crease between the breast. Excess skin is removed, and the nipple and areola are relocated to a higher position before closing the incisions. Patients with less extensive sagging and smaller breasts may be candidates for a smaller, concentric incision circling the areola.
The results of the procedure will be visible immediately after the surgery and the recovery period will allow the body to heal completely. After the surgery, the patient will receive a surgical bra to wear for one week after the surgery and a support bra to wear for another 2-3 weeks.
In some cases, the breast lift procedure may be combined with breast augmentation with implants to both uplift and add more volume to the breasts. The physician will not only remove the excess skin, but also add a saline or silicone gel implant. Women with larger breasts may be advised to consider breast reduction, especially if the sizes of their breasts are causing physical discomfort. In that case, the physician will remove both excess skin from the breast area and also decrease the overall amount of breast tissue during the process.
In order to make the right choice for your body, you should visit a physician to discuss your needs. Your doctor will be able to make the correct recommendation for your body type to achieve the look that you want.
