Typically, the doctor performs this plastic surgery procedure on patients who are dissatisfied with a heavy brow of excess skin, the height of the eyebrows, or creases that have formed in the skin horizontally on the forehead or vertically between the eyes. Developments in surgical techniques and instruments have led to different ways to perform cosmetic procedures. Traditional Brow Lift/Classic Brow Lift
A traditional brow lift procedure is performed through a large incision spanning the upper half of the face. The line begins above one ear and is carefully positioned behind the hairline to reach the other ear. It is through this surgical cut that the doctor can manipulate the position of the muscles below the skin. These important facial movement-producers are tightened to fight laxity in the forehead. Extra skin is cut away, and the remaining tissue is pulled slightly taught to smooth the look of the forehead. This surgery is considered invasive, though very effective in producing a natural, long-lasting result.
Endoscopic Brow lift
This version of forehead alteration is carried out through the use of an endoscope. This device may be handheld and consists of a long tube fitted with a light and camera to view tissues below the skin to reach the muscle. Because of the ability of the endoscope to translate the image of small structures unseen to the surgeon onto a screen, it is not necessary to produce the surgical incision created during the classic brow lift. Instead, small surgical cuts are concealed along the hairline so instruments can be inserted where necessary to lift and fix the muscles into place. This method is less invasive and, when performed by a board certified facial plastic surgeon, can create dramatic results that rival that of the more invasive technique.
The two procedures result in very similar results. A traditional lift will leave a larger incision along the scalp and cause a prolonged recovery time. Due to the lengthy cut in the tissue, nerve damage is a possibility. Through an endoscopic brow lift, there are smaller incisions through which tissues are repositioned, and recovery time is minimized.
In addition to the surgical methods used to alter to the look of the brow, there are other facial plastic procedures – both surgical and non-surgical – that can enhance the results of the lift. The doctor may also suggest a blepharoplasty (upper or lower eyelid surgery), Botox injections or dermal fillers, or skin resurfacing procedures such as a chemical peel or dermabrasion to complete a patient’s new look.
