Why this season will be so hard on the sinuses
|
(HealthNewsDigest.com) – It seems like the cold weather and the sniffles go hand-in-hand. People who suffer from chronic sinus issues (such as sinusitis) will likely find that this winter in particular will be hard on their sinuses.
However, while many people blame plunging temperatures for their achy heads and running noses, the truth is that the frigid cold isn’t to blame.
Board-certified otolaryngologist Dr. Jordan Pritikin explains, “It’s true that the winter can lead to sinus issues, but low temperatures aren’t the main culprit. Instead, sinus issues often worsen because people are stuck in the house, and with the heater running, the air is often dry as well as full of dust. Allergens get trapped in the house because there isn’t a lot of fresh air circulating and there is no moisture in the home.”
Dr. Pritikin advises the use of a humidifier, particularly in rooms where you spend a lot of time, such as the bedroom or the living room. He also says, “It’s wise to shorten your showers. As tempting as it is to luxuriate in a long, hot shower, it will only dry your skin and sinuses out further. Keep it short and sweet, and stay hydrated with plenty of water and fluids throughout the day.”
