(HealthNewsDigest.com) – AUSTIN, Texas, Feb. 10, 2014 — When it comes to preventive care, pet owners know that a healthy diet, regular exercise and up-to-date vaccinations support their pet’s health. February is National Pet Dental Health Month, which serves as a reminder that regular maintenance of a pet’s teeth and gums is equally important when it comes to their health. Dental health problems are one of the most common issues veterinarians find in pets and can lead to serious, life-threatening issues when left untreated. Visiting your veterinarian to establish a comprehensive dental health plan is the first step toward promoting good dental health for your pet.
“Providing regular oral homecare and regular visits to your family veterinarian or dental specialist will give your pets a longer, healthier and happier life,” said Debra Nossaman, DVM, DAVDC, a board-certified veterinary dentist and Texas Veterinary Medical Association member who owns Dallas Veterinary Dentistry and Oral Surgery in Southlake, Texas.
An unhealthy mouth impacts the rest of a pet’s body. Plaque, a sticky substance that builds up in the mouth, contains bacteria that can lead to periodontal disease, which can cause infections and inflammation in the heart valves, liver, kidneys and other organs. Periodontal disease can be prevented by yearly cleanings performed by veterinary professionals that are supplemented by effective in-home dental care.
Talk to your veterinarian for recommendations on how to ensure you’re maintaining your pet’s dental health at home in between professional cleanings. Some measures that may be suggested include teeth-brushing, dental chews, oral solutions and water additives.
