Good health starts with clean air in your home
|
(HealthNewsDigest.com) – The winter is a notoriously difficult time on one’s sinuses. Air is dry and stale as most of us have our heaters running 24-7 and we have limited access to fresh air and moisture. The result can be runny noses, aching heads, watery eyes, and even bloody noses in some cases.
Thankfully, there are many things you can do to help improve your air both at home and in your office. Board-certified otolaryngologist Dr. Jordan Pritikin offers his top tips for better breathing:
– Humidifiers are a must in the winter, and for those who live in high-altitudes all year long. Humidifiers increase moisture in the home, which can help to combat the low humidity that causes dried out mucus membranes. Dr. Pritikin says, “If possible, consider a whole-house humidifier which attaches to your home’s HVAC system. This will keep your entire home comfortable and free of dry, painful air. Otherwise, consider a point-of-use humidifier in the rooms you use most commonly, especially in the bedroom beside your bed. You can even put your own your desk in your office.”
– Clean out your filters monthly. When is the last time you changed the filters in your air vents? Dr. Pritikin says, “Dirty air vents are a breeding ground for dust, mold, mildew, and fungi. You don’t want to be breathing in those potentially dangerous substances. Swap out your air filters once a month, and make a standing appointment in your smartphone or your calendar to remind you.”
– Use a HEPA filter. Dr. Pritikin explains, “High-efficiency particulate absorption (HEPA) filters remove 99.97% of particles that pass through them. This makes them the top-of-the-line choice for anyone struggling with sinus or health concerns.”
– Last but not least, Dr. Pritikin advises people to ban all smoking from their home, even if it means asking guests to step out and light up. He also suggests that you clean your chimney regularly and have an inspector check it out once a year in order to make sure no clogs or animal nests are present.
