(HealthNewsDigest.com) – More than 65% of men will experience thinning hair by the age of 35, and men have spent billions chasing products and services that simply do not work. While there is no cure for hair loss, men today have many real and effective options to fight back against balding. In the past, hair transplant left men with obvious “plugs” of hair that looked like they belonged on a doll, not a human head. Advances in technology have made hair transplant a more effective option that creates a very natural-looking hairline.
Hair Transplants
One option to restore a hairline is follicular unit extraction (FUE), which, unlike the strip method, avoids a scar because hair grafts are harvested individually using a tiny punch. The resulting injury heals into a virtually undetectable scar that allows men to buzz their hair i they like. Men choosing this option should select a surgeon who is very experienced and does the procedure by hand, which is more expensive but offers a much higher regrowth rate.
The advantages of FUE include no linear scar in the donor site, allowing patients to wear their hair very short and decreased healing time. On the downside, the graft quality is not as high, as the grafts are more fragile and subject to trauma and damage during placement.
Also known as the strip method, this type of transplant involves using a strip of scalp with hairs taken from the back of the head. This strip is then used to extract hair follicles, unlike FUE, in which individual units of follicles are extracted directly.
Both methods are very effective, but both require many years of experience to master and achieve successful results.
Hair transplantation is an excellent option for men who want to overcome male pattern baldness. Every man has an area of hair in donor sites that are genetically programmed to resist the hormones that cause baldness. This donor site will be located in a horseshoe-shaped area around the back of the head. Transplanted hairs will grow naturally in their new location for permanent results.
Keep in mind that shock loss is very common after transfer. This hair loss usually occurs two to six weeks after the procedure, and usually affects transplanted hairs. This affects almost all patients, but it is very normal and occurs because the hairs weakened by the transplant are falling out. The hair roots do stay in place and get stronger to produce new hair after a few months, which shows the final results of the successful transplant.
Medication to Fight Hair Loss
There are also medications available that can help stop hair loss. Propecia is the most common and works to prevent hair loss. Men can begin taking Propecia at a fairly young age before they begin losing hair. About 65% of men who take Propecia experience a stop in hair loss and some hair regrowth. Another option is Finasteride, also known as Rogaine, that works by stopping the production of the hormone in the scalp that is responsible for hair loss.
