Experts weigh in on what 70 Looks like in 2014

(HealthNewsDigest.com) – What do Raquel Welch, Jane Fonda, Joy Behar, Barbara Streisand, Harrison Ford and Sean Connery have in common? They are all septuagenerians.
The roster of A-list celebs who qualify for social security goes on and on, and this makes one thing crystal clear: 70-plus never looked so good.
While many media reports proclaim 50 to be the new 30, it can also be said that 70 is the new 50. Today’s seniors are embracing their golden years and often look as good or better than they feel.
“70 is absolutely the new fifty,” says Stephen S Park, MD, the Vice-Chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and the President of The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS.org). “There is no question people of this generation are tuned in to their health, diet, hydration, physical fitness,” he says. “Many people in their 70’s go to the gym regularly and pump iron! Some of this stems from science. Some from media. Some from celebrities. “
And cosmetic surgery certainly has a place in this equation.
“The 70-year-old person today is fit and a frequent seeker of facial plastic surgery, in quest of matching their vibrant health with their outward appearance,” Park says. “Creams and lasers can only do so much. Gravity usually has the last word, unless it competes with the scalpel. “
Thanks to advances in technologies and innovative procedures to rejuvenate the face, while diminishing scars and recovery time, aging with grace has never been easier, adds New York City facial plastic surgeon Sam Rizk, MD. “Results continue to be more discreet and natural-looking, making surgical solutions a reality for many who may not have previously considered it,” he says.” Most of my patients in their 70s are hoping to match their vibrant health and active lifestyle with their outward appearance. We can do that with less invasive surgeries with smaller scars that require minimal anesthesia, and procedures that have a big impact on appearance and confidence.”
A recent study conducted by Max Yezhelyev, MD, PhD, Department of Plastic Surgery, Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN, entitled “Safety of Cosmetic Procedures in Elderly and Octogenarian Patients,” and released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (Plasticsurgery.org) showed good news for seniors in search of rejuvenation. An extensive review of information from 2008 to 2013 from the CosmetAssure database illustrated that post cosmetic surgery complications among the elderly occurred at approximately the same rate as in younger patients.
The advent of non-surgical, less invasive options has also caught on with the over 65 set, who tend to have more disposable income to spend on their appearance. BOTOX® Cosmetic, hyaluronic acid fillers, and laser skin resurfacing, are just some of the most popular choices to reverse wrinkles and turn back the clock that do not involve surgery.
Washington DC dermatologist Rebecca Kazin says, “According to the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS.net) Survey, the highest overall satisfaction ratings in 2013 were for injectable wrinkle treatments and injectable filler treatments to soften facial lines and wrinkles and restore volume in the face, which are also the two cosmetic treatments performed most frequently by dermatologic surgeons. Without a doubt, we are seeing more patients in their 60s and 70s who are having these treatments done to look more youthful without surgery, and to maintain the results of more invasive procedures.”
And with Susan Sarandon and other celebs approaching their 7th decade we can only assume 70 will get sexier and sexier.
