(HealthNewsDigest.com) – Younger patients make the best facelift patients. That is, according to a study published in the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. It found that women who had a facelift performed before the age of 50 actually found better, longer lasting results than those with aging skin. The data, put together by the America Society of Plastic surgeons (ASPS), shows that women under the half-century mark were pleased with the benefits of their surgery up to a decade after their initial procedure.
A Changing Attitude Towards the Facelift
Traditionally, the facelift has been considered a procedure for the older patient. As cosmetic surgery trends change, so does the average age a woman seeks a facelift procedure. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) the average age for a facelift falls in the 55 and up age group, but the percentage of younger patients is steadily on the rise. Interest is peaking in younger patients as doctors report that patients under 50 have a remarkable ability to maintain a refreshed appearance after a facelift.
The Young Facelift Procedure
Patients in their late 30s and 40s, with minimal sagging and wrinkling, find that with the help of a ‘maintenance facelift’, they can hang on to their youthful appearance for years longer. Tightening the skin and lifting the tissues can intercept and prevent the inevitable changes that add years onto their looks.
In the past, younger patients who were interest in facial rejuvenation procedures were steered away from invasive techniques such as the facelift. Doctors would recommend limited or nonsurgical procedures to temporarily prevent the signs of aging. However, with the research available today, it is the younger patient that will have longer lasting results, making them ideal for surgery.
Facelifts Over 50
Conversely, patients who have undergone a facelift over the age of 50 are more likely to be dissatisfied with their results. This is due to the fact that delicate, aging tissues can mean variable, less consistent results. Studies have also shown that, as the natural rate of aging continues, patients opting for a facelift over the age of 60 would still show significant changes in the following 10 years.
How to Maintain Long-Term Facelift Results
At any age, women will need to take meticulous care of the skin in order to maintain their facelift results. Proper skincare should be followed, such as regularly applying a quality moisturizer and daily sunscreen. A healthy diet will boost the skin’s immunity and healing ability. Women should not smoke, avoid tanning beds, and routinely get sufficient sleep. When taking care of the face and body, the benefits of surgery will last for years to come. Then, when the first signs of wrinkles or aging appear, a noninvasive treatment such as Botox or dermal fillers can maintain the skin’s youthful appearance.
