(HealthNewsDigest.com) The cooler temps’ means pumpkin spiced lattes and peppermint mochas, but they also bring with them an inherent desire to have a partner. Urban Dictionary calls the seasonal change, “cuffing season,” and for those of you who haven’t heard that term before, it simply means during the Fall and Winter months people who would normally rather be single or promiscuous find themselves along with the rest of the world desiring to be “Cuffed” or tied down by a serious relationship. Whether it is wired into us or is a survival instinct, if you find you have more dates than usual, cuffing season may be the reason.
Possible reasons for cuffing season:
1. It may be wired into us biologically. As the temperatures drop you are forced inside more and the increased dark, cold weather is associated with loneliness.
2. Social pressure. The holidays bring with them parties at work and among friends. It’s embarrassing if you don’t have someone to go with.
3. Romance of the season. Holiday advertising promotes love and families. If you’re alone, you may feel like a loser.
4. Online dating websites have noticed an increase during the holiday seasons, which continues through January.
5. There is more vacation time during the holidays and going on vacation alone is not as desirable as going with someone you care about.
Cuffing season is limited, and depending on how early it begins it can seem to end just as quickly and as harshly. Many times it does not extend through Valentine’s Day, which is a huge drawback to any relationship. Many times you can tell very quickly in the relationship if it’s a passing one, or something more serious.
Below are signs and symptoms that it will not last.
1. If it begins too fast and furious (temporary relationships send many texts sooner than the depth of the relationship dictates).
2. If the texts come at strange hours of the day.
3. Sex is pressured and talked about frequently too soon.
4. Dates are set up last minute.
5. Intimate details are not shared, and there isn’t any sort of commitment or talk of future plans or visions for future time together. http://t.co/qUsY6TloMC
*Before you end up with someone that you really care for only to find that they are using you for the season, it is wise to ask yourself, “Is a warm body better than nobody over the holidays?” Depending on your answer to this question, you can decide if seasonal cuffing is for you. -Mary Jo Rapini
