(HealthNewsDigest.com) – Wisdom teeth are sometimes regarded as “third molars” and they usually begin to develop within individuals between the ages of seventeen and twenty-five. However, statistics show that anywhere up to 35% of the population never experience the emergence of wisdom teeth at all. For those of us who do develop wisdom teeth, there are unfortunately a number of complications and possibilities that can arise.
In most cases, the wisdom teeth are extracted as a preventive measure rather than a cure to an ailment. However, in some instances, when the teeth are allowed to grow, complications develop that vary in intensity and severity. Some of the complications that can arise from allowing the wisdom teeth to grow unchecked are:
o Gum infection.
o Crowding of the teeth.
o Development of a free-moving gum tissue.
o Forcing existing teeth out of alignment.
o Bleeding of the gums.
o Consistent and persistent tooth ache.
To prevent these conditions developing, Dr. John Paul Gallardo and Dr. William P. Lamas at the Periodontics and Implant Dentistry perform wisdom teeth removal. With their team of experienced staff, many conditions resulting from neglected or ignored wisdom teeth ailments are treated.
How are wisdom teeth removed?
Before your wisdom teeth are removed, Dr. Gallardo and Dr. Lamas will take a full set of thorough x-rays to ensure that they do actually need to be removed. The x-ray will allow professionals to see the type of problem he may be dealing with, or the issues that could arise in the future if the tooth is allowed to continue developing.
The procedure can be straight forward as pulling out a tooth under local anesthetic or it could be complicated requiring general anesthetic for oral surgery. In some cases where neighboring teeth have been damaged because of stress exerted by the wisdom teeth or by infections arising from injured gums, reconstructive dental surgeries are required. Procedures like Single Tooth Replacement might be necessary for molars damaged by the wisdom teeth.
If the wisdom tooth has not fully protruded, the gum is cut to expose the tooth. After the wisdom tooth is visible, it is wither extracted in whole, or in segments. After the tooth is removed, the gum is closed back up with stitches. The stitches could be either self-dissolving or may require to be taken out. To aid the recovery and to reduce the chance of an infection building up, the practitioners at Periodontics and Implant Dentistry also provide a treatment of patient-specific proteins that speed up the healing process.
Recovery from the extraction
Patients usually fully recover within a month of the operation. The first few days after the procedure are the toughest as patients suffer from pain in the jaw that might extend to the side of the face. For the initial period, the patient would have to eat only semi-solids like soups as to not exacerbate the condition of the healing gums. However, if some complication does occur, it is taken care of in additional consultation appointments. Sometimes, patients will be required to perform some basic follow-up care to ensure that further problems do not arise.
Some uncommon side effects include nerve damage in the jaw, non-stop gum bleeding, and damage to existing teeth work like crowns or implants. Therefore it is vital to discuss and mention all possibilities and concerns during a consultation meeting with the doctor.
