(HealthNewsDigest.com) – The older a person gets, the more the signs of ageing are visible on the face. Throughout one’s life the face goes through a tremendous work even if we don’t consciously realize it. Making facial expressions, pulling and pinching the cheeks, exposing it to UV rays of the sun all make the skin age faster than any other skin area on the body.
Making You Look Better
Therefore, there comes a time when a person looks into the mirror and notices small wrinkles or slight sagging of the facial skin. Noticing age catching up in such a visible are of the body would definitely affect the confidence levels of a person. Anti-ageing lotions and creams can only delay the process, not stop it. Therefore, the third most common cosmetic surgery performed in the US is rhytidectomy which is a facelift.
A facelift procedure is most commonly adapted by people in their forties and fifties. The surgery requires the skin to be detached from the tissues underneath and tightened to give a taught, youthful appearance. However, a full facelift if not always required as can be determined by a consultation with a renowned, competent plastic surgeon like Dr. Mark Hamilton. In his clinic he also offers smaller procedures like mini-facelift and neck-lift. These procedures are not as extensive or invasive as the facelift and focus on a portion of the face rather than the entire face.
The procedure
A consultative meeting is first held with the surgeon. At this point, the areas that are of concern are addressed. This not only alleviates any fears and misconceptions the patient might have, but it also provides the surgeon a clear understanding of what the patient wishes to have done.
To make the consultation effective, the surgeon needs to have substantial expertise in their respective field. Dr. Hamilton, in this regard is thoroughly experienced in plastic surgery, in particular, facial plastic surgery procedures.
Once the patient is put under general anesthesia, incisions are made at the hairline that extends near the boundary of the forehead. Incisions are also made near the ears, at the base of the head and, if required, under the chin. These incisions are strategically placed to minimize the appearance of scars after the procedure. Once the incisions are made, the muscles and connective tissues under the skin are tightened. Additional fatty tissues and skin are trimmed before suturing the incisions closed.
What to expect from the procedure
The face is bandaged after the operation to prevent damage to the sutures and avoid tissue displacement under the skin. In addition to this, the following conditions will be observed after the operation:
§ Swelling to the face.
§ Tightness of the skin.
§ Headaches.
§ Yellowish pigmentation of the skin.
§ Fluid built up under the skin, and might require drains to extract excess fluid.
After about six months of the procedure, the tissues should be completely healed. If any other symptoms persist, consulting the surgeon would be the best option. Complications rarely arise if adequate care is maintained. However, it is not uncommon for the incisions to get infected. A course of antibiotics prescribed by the doctor should keep the infection in check though. After healing, with proper skin therapy, the effects could last for more than a decade.
