(HealthNewsDigest.com) – It is flu season. If you happen to catch this nasty virus, author and healthy living consultant Felicia Stoler, DCN, MS, RD, FACSM shares her tips for relieving the miserable symptoms.
“The flu can be simply awful,” comments Stoler. “And yes, there is some truth to chicken soup being a good remedy. That’s because we really need are fluids and salt. Drinking lots of water is also really important.”
Stoler suggests using other things that you may already have in your cabinets at home.
- Ginger for upset stomachs: “Growing up, ginger ale was always my go-to when I didn’t feel well. You can also use fresh ginger or ginger candy. Look for ways to add chopped ginger to your food.”
- Sports drinks, such as Gatorade: “These may be helpful if symptoms include vomiting and/or diarrhea, because they help restore electrolytes.”
- GUNA-Flu for temporary relief of fever as well as minor aches and pains: “This is a natural remedy, from Italy, that works sublingually. You put these tiny, quick-dissolving pellets underneath your tongue. That way, the formula doesn’t have to get digested through your stomach. It goes right into your bloodstream. That really helps the amount of time that you experience flu symptoms.”
- A humidifier and eucalyptus rub: “Invest in a little portable humidifier that works using bottled water. There are some that will last up to 12 hours. To open sinuses, I like to put a eucalyptus rub on the back of a spoon. Run hot water over it, while bending over the sink with a towel on your head. Or, use a saline spray.”
Stoler, an exercise physiologist, says it’s okay to skip workouts when you’re really sick. Just remember that exercise helps to support the immune system, so re-start your fitness routine once you’re feeling better.
Following these tips won’t magically make the flu virus disappear, but they will help to make symptoms more tolerable.
