(HealthNewsDigest.com) – Originally introduced into the world of surgery ten years ago, in 2005, balloon sinuplasty is an FDA approved method of treating the significant problems that come with chronic sinus problems. Chronic sinusitis is an inflammatory condition which can take place in either one, or both of the sinuses.
Although it less common than acute sinusitis, over the years, scientists and medical professionals suggest that the problem is becoming more common. Where typical medications have proven to be ineffective, and other, older surgeries have been determined as uncomfortable, balloon sinuplasty has emerged as a breath of fresh air in treating sinus problems.
As with any medical procedure, it’s important for the patient to feel safe and comfortable in the hands of their surgeon. Dr. Nathan. E Nachlas is a reconstructive and plastic surgeon renowned throughout his field for his specialization in rhinoplasty and sinuses. The pioneer of the total nose approach, where sinus surgery and rhinoplasty are combined, Nachlas dedicates his profession to improving his patient’s well-being, and quality of life.
Dealing with Chronic Sinusitis
Continuing to live with chronic sinusitis which is left untreated for an extended period of time can be incredibly uncomfortable for those suffering, presenting frequent, and persistent symptoms. Although serious complications associated with this issue are regularly uncommon, a sinus infection has been known to spread to other areas in the face, including adjoining bones, the area around the eye, into the blood, and even into the brain.
Typically, children are more susceptible to adults when it comes to complications regarding chronic sinusitis, but it is often recommended by medical professionals that individuals seek help for the condition before it grows too severe. Often, this help will start off in the form of medical treatments, such as painkillers, antifungal medications, and steroids applied to the nasal lining. If these treatments don’t have a significant impact, balloon sinuplasty may come into play.
What Balloon Sinuplasty Does
Balloon sinuplasty can be used to treat the frontal sinus which is located above the eyebrow and inner eye area, the sphenoid sinus, between the eyes and deep behind the nose, and the maxillary sinus, below the eyes and behind the cheekbones. Because it involves no cutting whatsoever, balloon sinuplasty can allow the patient to return quickly to their normal daily functions, with the minimum amount of discomfort. This can be a huge relief in comparison to traditional sinus procedures, where additional surgical and medical treatment is often required.
The Procedure
Effective, safe and quick, balloon sinuplasty can be done by inserting a single catheter into the sinuses via the nostrils, which will then locate the cause of the blockage. This particular sinus is then targeted when the surgeon inserts a small balloon into the space and inflates it, causing the blockage to clear, and the sinuses to be re-opened. Once the blockage has been removed, the balloon can be deflated, and any pus or mucus is flushed away using an irrigation catheter.
When it comes to sinus surgery, this procedure is often considered to be the speediest and safest option, with over 95% of all patients claiming that they would recommend it to someone with similar problems.
