(HealthNewsDigest.com) – When country music artist and advanced colorectal cancer advocate Wade Hayes was told by his oncologist that he no longer had evidence of the disease, he was inspired to write the cover track of his new album “Go Live Your Life.” Hayes is partnering with Genentech during Colon Cancer Awareness Month this March to raise awareness, and give back to patients who need it most.
Wade’s Story
In 2011, Hayes was at the height of his career producing Country Billboard chart-topping hits, and receiving nominations for awards including Top New Male Vocalist of the Year by the Country Music Association. On the way to a show in Houston, he experienced a sudden, severe pain in his abdomen. After seeing his doctor, tests confirmed his diagnosis of advanced colorectal cancer, a disease that impacts more than 136,000 Americans each year with about one in five having an advanced form.
“The diagnosis couldn’t have come at a worse time for me, career-wise,” says Hayes. “Performing at shows was out of the question.”
While Hayes put his music career on hold to focus on his health, he received an outpouring of well wishes from his fans on social media. When he realized how far his reach could go, Hayes decided this was an opportunity to make a difference, and “transform his diagnosis into a blessing.” Hayes partnered with the Colon Cancer Alliance, performing at benefit concerts and participated in awareness activities.
“Go Live Your Life”
After completing treatment in early 2013, Hayes went to see his oncologist for his final scan, which showed no evidence of the disease. Unsure of what the next step would be in his journey, his oncologist turned to him and said, “Now go live your life.”
“It was a life-changing moment for me,” recalls Hayes. “Because of what I’ve been through, I’m partnering with Genentech to raise awareness of advanced colorectal cancer. I hope “Go Live Your Life” can help motivate anyone going through a difficult time.”
For every iTunes download of “Go Live Your Life”, Genentech will make a donation of $1 (up to $50,000), to the Colon Cancer Alliance’s Blue Note Fund, a program that supports advanced colorectal cancer patients.
