(HealthNewsDigest.com) – WASHINGTON (December 3, 2015) — More than 1,000 leading neonatal doctors and specialists will gather on December 6 in Washington, D.C., for Hot Topics in Neonatology, a four-day summit coordinated by Nemours Children’s Health System. Designed to help clinicians improve the care of the smallest and most medically fragile infants, the conference will review emerging best practices and controversial treatments for newborn infants.
For more than 30 years, Hot Topics in Neonatology has been the nation’s premiere neonatal conference. The convening serves as a sounding board for emerging therapies and controversial treatments for newborns, with the goal of improving bedside care and patient outcomes. The 2015 conference will be heldDecember 6-9 at the Marriott Marquis in Washington, D.C.
Highlighted research includes:
- Use of anartificial placenta/uterus to encourage improved organ development in premature infants
• Benefits and health outcomes of donated or fortified human breast milk with premature infants
• Predictors for poor long-term outcomes in very low birth weight infants
• Use of neonatal resuscitation monitors to show if ventilation (intubation) is effective in infant resuscitation
“This is a unique opportunity for leaders in neonatal medicine to convene and discuss the newest research on the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of health problems in premature and critically-ill infants,” said Jay S. Greenspan, MD, MBA, chair of pediatrics at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children. “We are expecting this conference to help move the needle on care in neonatology and instill the essential skills to care for this patient population, while forging a path to innovative measures for saving infants’ lives.”
Global neonatology and perinatology experts, including Alan W. Flake, MD, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, John A. F. Zupancic, MD, ScD, Harvard Medical School, Jørgen E. Linde, MD, Stavanger University Hospital in Norway and Myra Wyckoff, MD, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas will present findings of their work.
