Do Your Homework Before Scheduling Facial Plastic Surgery

(HealthNewsDigest.com) – Your inbox is flooded with deals and steals promising discounted laser skin resurfacing, injectables and much more, but if you are too quick to jump at the offer, you may be sabotaging your safety for savings.

What can go wrong? “A lot,” says Dr. Edwin Williams, facial plastic surgeon and president of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS). “E’s television show ‘Botched’ is a runaway hit and largely documents the risks associated with plastic surgery performed on the cheap, in the US and abroad, as well as what can happen when you put your faith in a non-qualified provider,” says Dr. Williams.

Often these deals pedal a false bill of goods. “The procedure you sign up for may be performed by a non-qualified provider and/or may be ill-advised for you,” says Dr. Russell Ries, facial plastic surgeon and Group VP for Public and Regulatory Affairs for the AAFPRS.

There has been a pronounced uptick in the number of people seeking board certified facial plastic surgeons to help repair the damage created by unqualified physicians, Dr. Ries says. “We constantly see individuals for revision work after they trust their face to someone other than a facial plastic surgeon.”

Issues can range from cosmetic dissatisfaction with the results to critical injury, and in extreme cases, death.

“Facial plastic surgeons have the necessary qualifications and specialized skill set to safely perform these surgeries of the face,” says Dr. Williams.

Research surgeons and procedural information via trusted online sources (www.aafprs.org) before scheduling your surgery. Review before/after options and don’t be afraid to ask tough questions about background and credentials.
