(HealthNewsDigest.com) – The human body is one of the most complex systems on the planet. From the skeletal system to the immune system, the body’s intricate details all work together to keep people moving. One of the most vital and intricate sections of the body is the spine. The spine has evolved into one of the most important and yet one of the most delicate sections of the body. Despite quite literally being the “backbone” of the skeletal and nervous systems, the spine is one of the most commonly damaged parts of the body. Due to it’s nature, it is also one of the most difficult to heal when damaged. Back pain has plagued thousands of people ranging from minor aches and pains to complete immobility. However, even if you have a back injury that does not mean it is the end, there are still ways to help improve your daily life.
Increase Your Mobility
When you suffer from back pain you might find that going out or going to work may become harder. Standing or sitting for long periods of time will now cause your back to stiffen up and cause discomfort or pain. Depending on your situation even moving around the house or going up and down a flight of stairs could become a struggle. If this is the case, one way to solve this problem is to install something like an EasyClimber stair lift or an in-home elevator. This will allow you to go up and down the stairs of your house easily with far less risk of injury.
If your back pain is severe but you’re a hopeless extrovert and need to get out of the house, you may need to invest in a wheelchair or mobile scooter. The extra maneuverability of a mobile scooter can even be used indoors making moving around your own house, or the grocery store much easier.
Continue to Exercise
If you were to ask any physical therapist, chiropractor, or doctor, what you should do with your back injury, they will almost always tell you to continue to exercise and might even give you some stretches or light exercises to do. Obviously, ask your doctor or therapist about any exercises first so that you don’t cause further damage to your spine. One of the easiest things you can do is simply walk. You don’t have to walk 5-10 miles a day, but a short walk in the morning will continue to strengthen the muscles around your legs, hips, and back, all of which support the spinal cord.
Another type of exercise you could try is yoga. While you might think it is the newest millennial fad or that you aren’t quite flexible enough, many people have shown that yoga helps alleviate back pain. Again this depends on the type and severity of your injury, always ask a doctor or physical therapist beforehand.
A third type of exercise that you can try is called isometrics. Isometric exercises are when you use your muscles against each other to create resistance. Certain isometric exercises can help build muscle in the back and legs without motion. The lack of twisting and turning will take pressure off your back while building muscles to support. If you’re able, an example of these exercises is the plank.
Observe Your Mental Health
When you suffer from pain suddenly it can sometimes seem like things are completely out of your control. You may begin to see a decline in your social life, ability to work, and overall mood and this could lead to mental or emotional breakdowns and fatigue. Some serious threats that you might not think of are chronic depression and anxiety brought on by the pain. Both of these can lead to illness or increased chance for heart attacks and strokes. Sometimes you may not notice these things right away so pay attention to the people around you and listen if they think something is wrong. Getting a counselor or therapist can greatly increase your mental health, as well as having a professional who can spot the signs of depression or anxiety if they begin to set in.
Money
Money could easily become a problem with back pain. The inability to work with the addition of medical costs, physical therapy, counseling, and other expenses can seem like they are going to bury you. The best advice I can give is to remember your priorities. Your health and livelihood are more important than any amount of money, and if you have dependents it can be difficult, but social security and disability can help you to make ends meet. Overall, when suffering from a back injury the most important thing is to focus on getting healthy enough to make a lifestyle that you enjoy.
