(HealthNewsDigest.com) – With a new haircut, some highlights, a hot new outfit and a sun-kissed complexion, many teens envision a dramatic reveal when they return to school to start a new semester.
Some teens, however, take ‘new year, new look’ to another level. More teens are using their summer breaks as a stay-cation for plastic surgery.
“Teens often request nose reshaping or rhinoplasty surgery over long breaks before the school year to give themselves a fresh start and more confidence for the year ahead,” says Dr. Fred Fedok, facial plastic surgeon and President of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS).
“Social media and image-driven apps like Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook make teens even more focused on the way they look now compared to just years ago – and more self-conscious,” says Dr. Fedok. “Trending tags like #RhinoDiary are desensitizing Millennials to plastic surgery, and some teens are now wearing their bandages like a badge of honor.”
Rhinoplasty is far and away the most popular facial plastic surgery among teens. In fact, of all rhinoplasty procedures last year, 21% were performed on patients under age 21, according to a survey by AAFPRS.
Some things to consider before booking: “We need to know a teenager wants surgery for him or herself, not to please someone else,” says Dr. Fedok. “We also evaluate whether they are a good candidate – only after the nose has fully developed (usually around age 14 or 15) will we perform surgery. Parents should take an active role in finding a board-certified facial plastic surgeon for teen rhinoplasty and do their own homework before booking.”
