Here are five tips that can help you outsmart winter:
1. Plan your trip. Check the weather, road conditions and traffic along your route. Allow plenty of time so you don’t have to rush. Familiarize yourself with directions and maps before you go, even if you use a navigation app, and let others know your route and anticipated arrival time.

3. Check your tires. Inspect your tires—including the spare—at least monthly and before long road trips. It takes only about five minutes. See that each is filled to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended inflation pressure, listed in your owner’s manual and on the driver’s side door frame. Look closely at the tread. Put a penny in, Lincoln’s head facing down. If you can see all of Lincoln’s head, the tread depth is less than 1/16th of an inch and it’s time for a new tire.
4. Stay up-to-date on your car’s health.
