(HealthNewsDigest.com) – Holidays are a time for family, friends and happy memories. But these joyful moments can also be associated with stress – from marathon shopping, to preparing for celebrations, to traveling. Stress and other stimuli may trigger or increase headaches.
The National Headache Foundation recommends the following to avoid holiday headaches:
Sleep Regularly: Late night parties can wreak havoc on anyone’s health, especially those with chronic headache and migraine. Try to go to sleep and wake up at the same time each day while maintaining 8 hours of sleep per night.
Eat Often: Too often, people skip or miss meals during all of the activities associated with the holidays. If a regular meal schedule cannot be adhered to, try packing nutrient-rich snacks.
Eat Well: In addition to eating regularly, use moderation when indulging in holiday cuisine. Many holiday staples are high in sugar and sodium, both of which are potential headache triggers.
Drink Sparingly: Speaking of moderation, let’s not forget about hangover headache. Feel free to get into the “spirit” of things. However, headache sufferers should be cognizant of alcohol and how it can be a major trigger.
Avoid Scents & Lights: Holiday lights and the scent of balsam trees are plentiful during the holidays. While they may be hard to avoid, try not to spend too much time in rooms with flashing lights and strong scents.
