(HealthNewsDigest.com – It may be the season of miracles, but don’t count on going directly from your facial plastic surgeon to the holiday party this year. While non-surgical treatments can offer solutions without the downtime necessary for surgical procedures, they don’t necessarily eliminate the time factor completely.
According to the latest annual survey performed by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS), the top 3 non-surgical facial treatments member surgeons performed last year were Botox (96%), fillers (91%) and skin treatments (87%), including chemical peels, microdermabrasion, lasers and light treatments. But believing that these non-surgical options will deliver instant results is a big assumption that could wreck the best of holiday plans.
- Achieving optimal results with injectable neurotoxins (Botox, Dysport, Xeomin) requires healing few hours to a full day for the redness at the injection sites to totally disappear.
- Dermal fillers are characterized by post-injection swelling and possible bruising that can last several days.
- Skin resurfacing treatments can require 24 hours (microdermabrasion) to a week or more for more aggressive chemical peels and laser treatments, though certain mild peels and superficial laser and light skin treatments are appropriate for next day party prep.
“Cosmetic treatments and surgeries typically increase by about 25% from Thanksgiving through New Year’s Eve for many of our facial plastic surgeon members,” said AAFPRS president Phillip R. Langsdon, MD. “For many patients the holidays offer time off from work or school to heal from a facial rejuvenation treatment. Plus, of course, everyone wants to look his/her best when reconnecting with family and friends you don’t see as often. It’s important for patients to have realistic expectations with healing.”
This holiday season trust your face — and your treatment timing — to a facial plastic surgeon. You’ll look amazing for all the festivities.
Whether opting for surgical or non-surgical procedures, the AAFPRS reminds consumers to select a board-certified surgeon who specializes in plastic surgery of the face, head and neck. Research providers and treatment information via trusted online sources (www.aafprs.org), review before/after images and don’t be afraid to ask tough questions about background and credentials.
