Dense breast tissue has been associated with up to a 4 times higher risk of breast cancer, however, a new study suggests few women view breast density as a significant of a risk factor.
Tips to detect breast cancer early:
- Monthly self-exams: Women should perform a breast self-examination every month to check for any changes in the size or shape of their breasts, as well as for any lumps or thickening of the tissue.
- Clinical breast exams: Women should have a clinical breast exam performed by a healthcare provider, typically every 3 years for women in their 20s and 30s, and every year for women 40 and older.
- Mammograms: Women should have a mammogram, an X-ray of the breast, every year starting at age 45, and earlier if they are at higher risk of breast cancer.
- Breast MRI: Women who are at high risk of breast cancer due to genetic predisposition, strong family history, or other factors may consider getting a breast MRI in addition to a mammogram.
- Consult a doctor if there is any abnormality: It is important to bring any changes or abnormalities to the attention of a healthcare provider as soon as possible for further evaluation.
It is important to note that these are guidelines and one should consult their doctor for personalized recommendations based on their individual medical history, risk factors and other considerations.
