(HealthNewsDigest.com) – Botox has been developed over the years as both a medical and cosmetic non-invasive technique for correcting flaws in the face and body. Specifically, it works on muscles, rather than tissue, and effectively relaxes them, albeit temporarily.
It can be used to treat things such as twitching eyelids, where the muscle spasms cause the eyelid to twitch, as well as conditions that cause the eyes not to line up properly. Other parts of the body, such as the neck, can also be treated, to reduce the effect of conditions that cause muscles to tighten up.
However, where Botox comes into its own is in helping to reduce the signs of aging. In a recent ABC News article, one doctor “suggests thinking of skin as a piece of paper that gets folded into a crease over and over again, which creates the wrinkles.”
Applying treatments like Botox helps to stave off this skin creasing, which should prevent wrinkles forming at a later stage. If they do, they can always be fixed with a combination of Botox and dermal fillers such as Juvederm, which can help to reverse, if only a little at a time, the effects of advancing age.
While there is a natural tendency to avoid interfering for as long as possible, and there are certainly issues with giving children Botox treatments, industry trends show that people in their 20s are now queuing up for the treatment. Starting younger as a preventative measure before the real signs of aging start to appear is probably not the best idea, according to the president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. He likens it to an arrow that should be kept in its quiver as a last resort.
Clean living and careful skin care, along with other products that help to stave off wrinkles, treat small ones as they form, and promote good skin, are probably all that are needed, at least in one’s 20s.
Later in life, skin resurfacing treatments, chemical peels, and microdermabrasion, alongside products chosen to protect and nourish the skin as well as promote collagen growth, and of course Botox, may all be good options.
